Davis Knocks a Home Run!

Drama, 133 minutes

Director: Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Jovon Apepo, Russell Hornsby, Stephen Henderson, Mykelti Williamson

Right off the bat, no pun intended, but the casting for Fences is outstanding! Give Washington credit for picking the best cast, which is why I listed everyone billed in the cast...well most of them. Give Washington credit for directing even though he missed out on the Oscar for his directing talent. Fences isn't about baseball, it's about keeping people inside, locked up, and domestic drama! Cory, played by Jovon Apepo, has a promising career in football and is recruited, however Pops won't let him go. Pops wasn't given a chance to play ball because of the color of his skin and he won't let his son go through the same pain. Cory later joins the Marines, foregoing his career in sports. Later Pops has an affair and fathers another child which brings me to the real star of this flick. Viola Davis who plays Rose is a proud, determined black woman who steals the cinema screen with her stellar performance. Hell, I wanted to reach into the TV and slap Pops myself! Rose is certainly the backbone of this family and dedicated to the core, no matter what Pops does. No doubt Davis should win the Oscar for Best Supporting Female. Great movie, highly recommend for a Saturday night popcorn feast!
